Sharjah girl dies in accident: Parents must follow road safety rules, says her school principal

The body of Kavya Rao, an 8-year-old student of Our Own English High School Sharjah, who died in a road accident, was moved to Hyderabad, India, on Monday night, according to family sources.

The Indian family from Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, has been saddened by the freak accident in Sharjah that killed the girl, who was hit by a taxi while crossing the road along with a group of people during the evening rush hour.

According to family friends, the girl was crossing the Al Istiqal road near Mega Mall with a group of other people who were not using a pedestrian crossing.

The girl was with her mother and younger brother when she was hit, allegedly by the speeding taxi. While other vehicles stopped to give way for the pedestrians, the taxi hit the girl as she was about to reach the other side of the road.

The girl killed in the accident is the elder daughter of Shankiar Rao and Usha from Hyderabad, India.

The principal of Our Own English School, Asma Gilani, has appealed to all parents and students to strictly follow traffic and pedestrian rules about which the school regularly conducts awareness and knowledge sessions in the classroom and through extra-curricular activities.

Speaking to Emirates 24|7, Gilani said while school teachers and students are mourning the death of a talented student, the incident also highlights the need for not only students, but also their parents to follow traffic and pedestrian rules.

“I am deeply saddened by the sad demise of Kavya who was a Grade Four student of our school. I know that she was a good dancer and got some prizes in dance competitions in the school. Her younger brother is also a KG student in our school,” the principal said, adding that since the school is closed for annual vacation, there is no special or condolence meeting for the deceased student.
