15 killed, 7,000 displaced in Sri Lanka

Colombo: At least 15 people are feared killed in Sri Lanka due to floods, according to the Disaster Management Centre (DMC), reported the ‘The Island’.

Of the victims, seven are children aged between 4 and 9 years.

Since the beginning of the monsoon season, June 1 recorded the highest rainfall in Kalutara district, which resulted in the overflowing of Uyanwatta Lake.

Around 7,194 people have been already displaced in KegalleKalutara, Colombo, Gampaha and Matara districts, according to Sarath Lal Kumara, DMC Deputy Director.

Several low lying areas in the country are inundated and people have been warned to be cautious.

Rivers such as Kalu, Kukule, Gin, Bentara and Nilwala could overflow anytime.
