19-year-old girl raped in cemetery

SRI LANKA: A 19-year-old girl had been raped by three men, at the Yakkarai Cemetery in Thunnalai, Jaffna, Nelliyadi Police said .

The victim, a resident of Thenmaratchi-Varani, had gone to the Vallipuram Alvaar Temple in Vadamarachchi with a male friend from the same village. According to the police, she and her friend had been intercepted by three men while returning from the temple. The men had attacked her friend and had dragged her to the Yakkarai Cemetery where she was raped.

The police added that her friend, who had been attacked, had informed the Nelliyadi Police.

Police had admitted the victim and her friend to the Manthikai Base Hospital.

The police found the wallet of one of the rapists in the cemetery and he has been identified. Police said they are carrying out further investigations.

The victim has been transferred to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital for further treatment.
