Colombo: The Sri Lanka Customs seized 2,800 pills generally prescribed to abort fetuses, sources said.

The stock that had been smuggled into the country from Chennai, India, is said to be worth Rs 560,000 [Dh16,256].

Customs Director and Spokesman, Leslie Gamini, said the pills were packed in four boxes, each containing 700 pills.

Sources at the Customs said this was the second such detection in recent times, the first being in April this year when a contraband of vials and pills used for abortion from Pakistan were smuggled into Sri Lanka.

The pills seized on Thursday had been smuggled into the country from Chennai by Sri Lankans, Customs sources further said.
