Cop brutally assaults woman

Latest: The police sergeant in the video below has been indentified as Prasanna Tissera. The policeman has also been reinstated since October12 on the orders of the Sabaragamuwa Province Senior DIG. Two police teams investigated the assault whilst taking statements from over 15 witnesses. Some residents of Ratnapura town too had protested demanding that Tissera be reinstated.

Colombo - A police officer brutally assaulted a young woman in front of hundreds, if not thousands of commuters, at the Ratnapura bus stand and the video clip of the incident had gone viral on the internet, ‘The Island’ reported.

The officer in uniform was seen assaulting the woman with what looked like a stick.

When asked for comments, Ratnapura police chief Palitha Fernando said though he had seen the video clip he was unable to identify the officer concerned, or the station he was attached to.

The ‘Daily Mirror’ reported, according to the police, that the cop who allegedly assaulted the woman had been barred from duty immediately pending an investigation.

Two women got into an argument and the policeman on duty tried to pull them apart. One of the women, angered by policeman’s interference, threw a stone at him who then retaliated by assaulting her with a stick.
