Friend killed over half bottle of alcohol

Police in Sri Lanka has arrested a man who killed his friend after a row started between them over a bottle of alcohol, the Sunday Mawbima has reported.

The victim and the suspect had gone to a dead person’s house and drank half a bottle of alcohol as they were going along with the funeral procession towards the burial ground.

While returning from the burial ground, the victim had asked for the remaining half of the bottle of alcohol from the suspect. A row started when he found that the suspect had drank it.

A police officer said that as their dispute went on, the suspect stabbed the victim’s neck with a knife used for tapping toddy and fled the scene.

The victim died instantly and the police arrested the suspect from hiding.

Police said both were labourers who were involved in many robberies in the area.

The suspect has been remanded to police custody after being produced before the Kandy court.

Bus, trishaw collide, killing family of four


Five people, including four members of a family, were killed when a trishaw and a private bus collided head-on in Sri Lanka on Friday.

The accident happened at daybreak on the Pore-Athrugiriya main road, local media reported.

At the time of the accident, the bus driven by its conductor. The bus was speeding as its driver wanted to mark time for the next journey from the time-keeper, police said.

The seriously wounded trishaw driver has been transferred to Colombo National Hospital.

The family had been travelling to see their father in Colombo Eye Hospital.

Police said that the driver of the bus possessed a driving licence for light vehicles only.
