Lankan nabbed with 10kg of ganja at airport

The narcotic was valued at Rs1.5 million

A Sri Lankan smuggler bringing in 10kg of the narcotic ganja valued at Rs1.5 million was arrested at  Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake by customs officers in the early hours of Monday.

The ‘Divaina’ newspaper reported that, according to Customs Preventive Division Director Leslie Gamini, the smuggler from Puttalam had 20 packets of the contraband in his luggage, each weighing 500 grammes.

He had declared that his bags contained plastic jewellery, but the customs had found ganja packed in black polythene underneath the jewellery, Gamini said.

It was found that he was a regular carrier of goods by air between India and Sri Lanka. The ganja was brought from Kerala in southern India.

He was handed over to the Police Narcotics Bureau at the airport after the preliminary investigations by the Customs.
