Colombo: A suspect, accused of stealing Rs 50 [Dh1.45] from a woman’s bag, was freed of charges on Thursday. Only that the day came 10 years later!
According to a Daily Mirror report, the suspect was in custody for three months before being released on bail. Thereafter he was once again arrested for absconding from court premises, and so the saga continued.
Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage who gave the verdict expressed his surprise that the case prolonged for a decade.
Indika Maduranga of Akuressa had pleaded guilty to the charge of stealing at the first instance and taking into account the time he spent in custody the judge ordered he be freed from the case.
He was arrested in 2003 for allegedly stealing Rs50 from a woman’s bag in Kollupitiya.
