SRI LANKA: An attempt by a 53-year-old Singapore-bound Sri Lankan to smuggle foreign currencies to the tune of Rs. 22.8 million was foiled by customs officials at the Bandaranaike International Airport on Monday night.

Spokesman and Director of the Customs Preventive Division, Leslie Gamini said the smuggler had hidden the money into condoms and inside the private parts of his body.

Assistant Customs Superintendent Duminda Sirisena, had been suspicious about the suspect’s ‘movements’ and ordered that he be checked, but they could not find anything at first. They, however, decided to examine him further and took him to the Negombo hospital, he added.

An x-ray had revealed where the contraband was hidden, he added.

Under interrogation, the smuggler revealed that he was a spare parts businessman from Negombo and the money he tried to smuggle out of the country belonged to some other person, who would pay him Rs75,000 for a single trip.

The smuggler had been released by the customs after imposing a fine of Rs250,000 and confiscating the foreign currency.
