Colombo: A mother of two climbed a coconut tree on Friday demanding her reinstatement and confirmation in service, ‘Dinamina’ newspaper reported on Saturday.

Her treetop protest bore fruit by winning her demands.

The 38-year-old woman, K . Pugngnawathi, a casual worker at the Katuwana Town Council, climbed a 30-foot coconut tree in front of the Town Council, sporting a pair of trousers to make her demands.

She staged that protest against her interdiction for not reporting to work on the two days following the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, police said.

Police said that the woman had launched her protest around 6am having climbed the tree by leaving her two children under it.

According to the Officer-in-Charge of the Katuwana police, Inspector Srilal  Hettiarachchi, who played a mediatory role in bringing the woman down, the Town Council Chairman had promised to reinstate her and take steps to have her confirmed in service.

She claimed that some casual workers, who were recruited after her, have been confirmed in service by the authorities while completely ignoring her.
