Published

Two foreign nationals were arrested by customs officials at the Bandaranaike International Airport, Katunayake early morning on Friday with a bundle of papers used for printing of fake American dollars, the Divaina newspaper reported.

The two were computer technology experts from Uganda and Sierra Leon.

They were arrested as they were trying to leave through the green channel exit which is used by passengers who have no goods to declare.

On further investigations, Superintendents of Customs, MKU Gamini and Keerthi Abeysekara found those paper bundles in their travelling bags when they were searched on suspicion.

This was the first time that the Department of Customs had confiscated such paper used to print fake dollar notes, a senior customs officer revealed to the Divaina newspaper further.

The customs department had produced those papers to an Airport Bank as they depicted features similar to American dollar notes and it was confirmed on examination by a special machine that they were papers used for printing fake dollars.

The amount of paper caught was enough to print 61,230 fake American dollar notes and the customs official said that the value of the seized goods would be about Rs7.65 million.
