Why young European woman begging

Colombo: Sri Lankan Police in Ella town arrested a tourist on charges of begging, as she was spotted sitting by the roadside, with a piece of cloth laid before her.

According to ‘Lankadeep’, however, the 24-year-old young English woman from Oxford who is on a month-long visit to the island nation was playing the violin to earn some cash.

She confessed to having no money on her and so she did what she knows best - play the violin and make money to meet her expenses.

Police released her with a warning that begging is an offence under the Immigration and Emigration Act 1948 No. 20 while residing as a tourist in the country.
