Teachers giving private lessons to be sacked

Abu Dhabi education authorities marked the beginning of the new scholastic year with a stern warning to public school teachers who engage in giving private lessons for money, saying they would be sacked.

Mugheer Al Khaili, director general of the Abu Dhabi Education Council, said school teachers who give private lessons to students for money at their homes are only harming their image in the society.

“We do not mind that teachers help students provided they do not get involved in such derogatory practices,” he said after an education meeting in Abu Dhabi.

“Teachers should not engage in private lessons for money….the Council’s new work contracts deprive all teachers from doing so and any one proved to be giving private lessons will be sacked.”

Khaily said he feels “upset” when he sees a teacher “moving from one house to another to ask for money.”

“This will only hurt the image and prestige of the teacher, who is supposed to enjoy respect and appreciation in the community.”
