UAE getting satellite Internet

UAE-based satellite communication company YahSat has announced the launch of satellite-based Internet service in the country, enabling users to connect to the world, and the world wide web, from remote corners.

The YahClick service will be offered to customers in the UAE by SkyStream and Safa telecom with download speeds of up to 15Mbps and upload seeds of 2.5Mbps.

YahClick, the new service by Al Yah Satellite Communications Company (Yahsat), complements the broadband and wireless services provided by etisalat and du, and is aimed at local businesses looking for a back-up in case of disruption apart from those in the farming and agricultural sector, disaster recovery, special projects, within construction sites, etc.

Yahsat defines YahClick as a high performance, broadband satellite Internet service that is set to provide local businesses and consumers with cost-effective, wide reaching, and reliable Internet connectivity.

Masood M Sharif Mahmood, Deputy CEO, Yahsat, said: “Today is a milestone launch for Yahsat as we bring our YahClick service into our home market in partnership with the TRA, Safa Telecom and Skystream.”

“Our focus will basically be aimed at business users but we also target home users,” said Shawkat Ahmad, Chief Commercial Officer, Yahsat.

“All that the user will have to install will be a 74-cm dish. We are able to achieve this thanks to our very high power infrastructure,” added Shawkat.

YahClick serivce operates from Yahsat’s Y1B satellite, uses Ka-band technology.

Yahsat is a joint stock company fully owned by Mubadala first launched the YahClick broadband satellite Internet service early September 2012.

UAE joins the list of various other countries in the region, including Afghanistan, Angola, Iraq, Nigeria and South Africa.

The company also has plans to expand its service to the rest of the Middle East, Africa, Central and South West Asia by the end of 2013.

To date, Yahsat has a network of 30 Service Partners across 28 countries throughout the Middle East, Africa, Central and South West Asia.
