UAE restaurants told to use Arabic menus

Restaurants in the UAE must start using menus in Arabic language along with other languages on Wednesday and outlets found abusing the decision would be fined Dh100,000,newspapers said on Tuesday.

The new decision is part of plans approved by the ministry of economy to gradually make Arabic the official language in all commercial outlets in the country.

Ministry inspects will start making random visits to restaurants from Wednesday while the ministry’s “hotline” will be open to any complaint from consumers about restaurant failing to present menus in Arabic, the papers said, quoting a ministry official.

“This decision is in line with plans by the UAE to make Arabic the basic language in all trade and official dealings.

The ministry of economy will enforce this decision in coordination with all relevant departments in the emirates,” said Hashim Al Nuaimi, director of the Consumer Protection Department.
