An Emirati woman’s car was confiscated by Dubai Police after her accumulated traffic fines reached a whopping Dh152,000.

The 35-year-old, who is a government employee, ignored repeated calls from the police to settle her dues, Khaleej Times reported.

Majority of her accumulated fines resulted from over-speeding and non-payment of Salik and the police were forced to confiscate her car after the woman stopped responding to the calls and switched her phone off, said Major Ahmed Al Ially, head of the Violations Follow-up Section The woman’s brother contacted the traffic department and has pledged to pay the fines and settle the issue.

Fines amounting to Dh305,473,930 were collected from traffic violating companies and individuals during the first six months of this year.

“We contact motorists if their fines exceed Dh5,000 and they do not show up to renew their registration. Companies are contacted if their accumulated fines reach 10,000 and they do not show up for renewal of registration,” he said.

The traffic police work out solutions with individuals who cannot afford to pay their fines, provided they respond to calls from the department regarding renewal of registration and paying of accumulated fines. In case they do not respond, the car is confiscated, he added.
