Asian airlines dominate a new ranking of "the most loved airlines" with Garuda Indonesia receiving the highest customer satisfaction score.

In the list compiled by international air transport rating organization Skytrax, the Indonesian carrier received an approval rating of 85 percent by fliers, followed by Asian Airlines and Eva Air.

In fact, 11 of the top 15 spots are occupied by Asian airlines. The highest non-Asian carrier is Greece's Aegean Airlines, which placed fourth on the list. The only North American carrier represented is Virgin America, which squeaked into 15th place.

Whilst there is a very mixed balance of review types (ie. favourable, unfavourable, neutral) many of the longer comments tend to be from unhappy customers who feel they received poor service or poor value. The most emotive reviews are from travellers who have suffered lost or delayed baggage.

For the ranking, analysts looked at how customers rated their overall flight experience, which was measured on a scale of one to 10.

Customers were asked to consider everything from seat comfort, onboard services, food and beverages, in-flight entertainment and value for money.

Another notable mover this year is low-cost carrier Ryanair, which scored higher than the UK's flagship carrier British Airways by six percent (62 percent versus 56 percent).

Amongst the big-3 Middle East airlines, Qatar Airways leads the way, ranked 12th worldwide with a satisfaction score of 75.16%, Emirates at 62.82% and Etihad Airways scoring 48.91%.

Europe’s most loved airline is Athens based Aegean Airlines who rank 4th worldwide on a satisfaction score of 80.7%. In the region, Lufthansa are No 2 in Europe scoring 71.01%, followed closely by Aer Lingus at 70.94%. Low-cost airline Ryanair (61.57%) has improved considerably in the last year, and now scores 6% higher than British Airways (55.63%).
