All 14 passengers and crew on board a Nepalese plane that crashed in bad weather near the capital Kathmandu on Tuesday were killed, the head of the rescue team said.

"Our teams have now reached the site and I can confirm that there are no survivors. All 14 people are dead," said Bimlesh Lal Karna, head of rescue operations with the civil aviation authority.

The passengers included six foreigners -  four Americans, one Japanese and one British citizen - according to the Nepal Tourism Board.

The small Agni Air plane was carrying 11 passengers and three crew to the Everest region when it crashed in bad weather in a field south of the Nepalese capital Kathmandu.

"The plane had taken off from Kathmandu airport with 11 passengers and three crew members to Lukla. Lukla is the gateway to the Everest region," the tourism board said on its website, confirming the nationalities of the six foreigners.

The plane was on its way back to Kathmandu after poor visibility prevented it from landing at Lukla.

Rescue teams were being hampered by heavy rain and landslides, which are common in Nepal during the current monsoon season.
