President Barack Obama has observed a moment of silence at a Sept. 11 memorial in New York where the World Trade Center once stood.

Obama and first lady Michelle Obama joined former President George W. Bush and his wife, Laura, at a reflecting pool where the north tower used to be.

They walked along the edge of the pool and stood silently before greeting relatives of the victims of the attacks.

New York had the highest death toll of the three locations attacked on Sept. 11, 2001.

Names 9/11 attack victims ring out at WTC site

The family members of people killed in the Sept. 11 attacks and the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center are remembering their loved ones at the newly opened Memorial Plaza at the World Trade Center site.

The city is observing the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on Sunday at the site. The centerpiece of the ceremony is the reading of the names of nearly 3,000 people who died in the attacks.

The ceremony also serves as the memorial's official opening. The site opens to the public on Monday. The memorial sits next to a construction project where office towers, a transportation hub and a cultural center are taking shape. The signature skyscraper, One World Trade Center, is rising quickly and will be the tallest in the country when completed.

New York observes 9/11 moment of silence

New York observed a moment of silence Sunday marking the exact time 10 years ago when the first of two hijacked planes hit the World Trade Center, starting the 9/11 attacks.

This was the first of six moments of silence to be observed at the ceremony at Ground Zero: one for each of the towers hit, one each for the Pentagon and the crash of Flight 93 in Pennsylvania and one each for the collapse of two towers.
