Sweden's Queen Silvia, the wife of King Carl XVI Gustaf, injured her foot and wrist this week while trying to escape a photographer from Swedish media in New York, the royal palace said Wednesday.

The queen, 67, was shopping on Monday with her youngest daughter Princess Madeleine, who lives in New York, when the pair was confronted with a photographer who ignored their plea to be left alone, the palace said.

"The queen chose to go out through a side door and walked quickly toward a parked car in order to keep away from the photographer who ran after her. The queen then fell and injured her foot and wrist," the palace said in a statement.

The photographer was a freelancer for tabloid Aftonbaldet, whose editor in chief said in the paper he "deeply regretted the incident."

The queen's schedule in New York was unchanged and she received a prize from organisation Health Right International as planned on Tuesday.

Photographs of her at the prize ceremony using a cane and wearing a foot and leg brace were published in Swedish media Wednesday.

Royal Palace spokesman Bertil Ternert said it was not known yet if legal action would be taken against the photographer or the paper.
