Ship with 17 crew missing off Philippines

Officials say the Philippine coast guard is searching for a domestic cargo ship with 17 crew which disappeared off a central province after encountering big waves and reporting engine trouble.

Coast guard chief Admiral Wilfredo Tamayo said Sunday that crewmen of the vessel, which was loaded with steel bars, reported engine trouble to its owner by radio on Saturday after encountering huge waves off Marinduque province.

Tamayo says after the distress call the ship lost contact with the owner.
