Residents of the Governorate of Taiz have managed to take 12.5 tonnes of flour into the governorate's capital after they broke the siege laid by the rebel Houthi group and militia loyal to ousted president Ali Abdullah Saleh.

In a show of solidarity, men, women and children from across the governorate crossed the mountains surrounding Taiz city on foot carrying bags of flour to the besieged city which is still suffering from lack of food, water and medicines as the rebel militia continue to shell residential areas.

The effort was part of the ‘Hand in Hand to Break the Siege Laid on Taiz’ campaign, being conducted by the residents of Yemen's southwestern governorate using local resources and donations.

Socotra Governor praises UAE for supporting Yemen

Governor of Socotra, Saeed Salim Bahakiba, praised the leaders, government and people of the UAE for backing the Yemeni people and helping alleviate their suffering as the rebel Houthi group and militia loyal to ousted president Ali Abdullah Saleh continue to launch brutal attacks on Yemeni cities and exacerbate the tragic humanitarian situation in the country.

In a statement to the official Yemen News Agency, Bahakiba noted that the humanitarian efforts being made by the UAE to help Yemen, including the delivery of medical supplies to Socotra Governorate today, continue to reduce the suffering of Yemenis in general.

For his part, Dr. Ali Al Makhini, director of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Hospital in Socotra, said the UAE delivered 15 tonnes of various medical supplies to the authorities in the governorate.
