Mumbai policeman cops a cool Dh17m in assets

Crime does pay it seems, at least in the case of an inspector at police station in Kalyan, Mumbai.

The man in question, CS Mali, was caught accepting bribe by the ACB, which was followed up by a raid at his residence that revealed assets worth a cool Rs250 million (Dh17.85m).

Anti-Corruption Bureau’s Thane unit raided the policeman’s home on Saturday, a day after he was arrested after being caught accepting a Rs60,000 bribe from a real estate guarantor, Raju Ratilal Soma.

At what were those assets, you wonder?

Well, officials discovered that the ‘good cop’ owns five flats worth Rs25m, two stores worth Rs500,000 in one building, while Mali also owns two flats worth Rs800,000 in nearby building and an 80 acre plot of land worth Rs160m in Solapur.

“We have seized two guns, two gas connection cards, and 450 grams of gold jewellery from Mali’s residence. We have also found details of two bank lockers and several bank accounts,” an ACB official told Mid-day.com.

According to sources Mali accumulated assets by extorting money from people, who invested in Sai Corporation’s disputed building near Adharwadi jail.

Mumbai Customs nab businessman smuggler

It seems the recent high profile detainments by the Mumbai Airport Customs has yet to deter enterprising minds from smuggling in goods into the country without declaring the obvious.

The latest was a New Delhi-based garment businessman who was arrested Thursday in an attempt to evade duty on gold jewellery and wrist watches worth Rs655,000.

Rawail Singh Grover, who apparently went on a shopping spree in Dubai last month, hid the jewellery in the pockets of his trousers, while concealing four wrist watches worth around Rs15,000 in his bag.

The permissible duty free baggage amount limit is Rs25,000.

According to Hindustan Times, a Customs batch headed by deputy commissioner Sameer Wankhede stopped Grover after he crossed the green channel, saying he had nothing to declare.

However, his suspicious mannerisms gave him away.

Grover was produced before a magistrate’s court on Thursday. Advocate Ravi Hirani, who represented Grover, said his client was released on bail of Rs50,000.

“He had bought the jewellery for his wife and due to some miscommunication, he took the green channel instead of the red channel,” said Hirani.
