Five per cent of juvenile crime cases in Dubai involved girls, while the rest were boys, according to a top official.

Speaking to ‘Emirates 24|7’, Advocate-General Mohammed Rostom, Head of Family and Juveniles Prosecution in Dubai, said number of juvenile girls involved in crimes is not high.

The most common crimes committed by juveniles in Dubai are theft, driving without licence, drug addiction or trade and assaults, he said.

“Majority of the cases seen by the Prosecution are related to boys. Lack of family attention topped the list of reasons why juveniles commit crimes,” he said and added that last year the Prosecution received 286 juveniles cases compared to 295 cases in 2013.

“From our experience, we find that family issues is the main reason for most juvenile cases. In majority of such cases, parents of these juveniles are either divorced and if they are living together then they have serious problems between them.”

Again, some parents are too busy with their own lives that they don’t pay attention to their children, who grow up looking for role models outside home. And that role model need not be the perfect one, he explained.

Adv. Gen. Rostom also pointed out that friends play a great role and influence juveniles.

“We have seen many cases where families raise children very well, but unfortunately they get into wrong friendships and end up committing crimes. That’s why it’s important for families to know their children’s friends as well as parents of their friends,” he advised.
