An Indian man who lent his passport to bail out a colleague says he is stuck in the UAE after his colleague failed to return from holiday.

Subash Satyam 29, from Varkala in Kerala has been working at a construction firm in the UAE since February 2010.

An employee of the company was killed in a construction site accident. “An engineer was jailed and the passport of another foreman was withheld by police. In fact, I was not even in the country when the accident happened,” said Satyam.

However, the foreman had an emergency and wanted to travel home and Satyam was asked to deposit his passport as a replacement. “The company asked me to do so and I obliged. He was supposed to return to the UAE within a week. But there is no news of him,” said Satyam.

His condition further worsened after the owner of the construction company he worked for absconded with nine months’ salary unpaid.

Unable to pay his rent he was asked to leave his accommodation last month and is now living at the mercy of his friends.

“Today I am stuck here, neither able to leave the country nor live and work here. With no passport, I am unable to apply for another job. It is nine months since I have been paid,” he added.

He has now approached the Indian welfare associations for help.
