Australian airline Qantas escaped having to paint a plane black, but the crew on a trans-Tasman flight donned New Zealand jerseys Monday after losing a bet on the outcome of the rugby World Cup.

New Zealand triumphed over Australia 34-17 at Twickenham on Saturday, but not before Air New Zealand and Qantas had engaged in enough friendly banter on Twitter to set up the #AirlineWager.

After the Kiwi carrier originally suggested Qantas paint a plane black if the Wallabies lost, the 'Flying Kangaroo' responded with a picture of an Air NZ airliner in the Australian colours saying: "While black is slimming, we think it needs a golden touch."

They eventually settled on flight crews of the losing airline wearing rival jerseys the day after the final.

"Today @Qantas played good sports and followed through with #AirlineWager wearing @AllBlacks jerseys on board," a jubilant Air NZ tweeted Monday.

Qantas confirmed that QF143 from Sydney to Auckland had a pilot and first officer as well as crew sporting the black jerseys.

"We still love the Qantas Wallabies, but a bet is a bet," the carrier conceded on its Facebook page. "Today we followed through with #AirlineWager and we accepted jerseys from @FlyAirNZ."
