Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo has run out of patience with £50 million flop Fernando Torres who is likely to face the axe when they travel to Italy for the Champions League clash against Juventus on Tuesday.

Di Matteo was left red-faced after a stunning defeat at West Brom and threatened to make wholesale changes to the Blues squad.

Asked directly if he would drop Torres, Di Matteo said: “I need to think about making changes. If I believe leaving out Torres is the right thing to do, I’ll do it.”

I think we will have to assess the whole team and see how everybody is, and how they have recovered.

Defeat at the Hawthorns extended Chelsea’s winless league streak to four matches, with just two points from 12 since the eventful home defeat to Manchester United.

The mood in the Chelsea dressing room after the defeat was akin to a rebellion with accusations being hurled against each other.

Saturday’s defeat took Chelsea’s goals conceded to 18 in the nine games since their last clean sheet, away to FC Nordsjaelland, and left Di Matteo considering a change in style to tighten up their defence.

Brendan Rodgers is badly in need of a strike partner for Luis Suarez with new signing Fabio Borini injured and Andy Carroll unlikely to be taken back after being sent on loan to West Ham.

“I think as a team we have to be better defending, you don’t defend with one player, you defend with the whole team, like you want your whole team helping when you are attacking as well.

"It is a defensive organisation on the pitch that we need to look at and as I said maybe I have to do some changes.”

A draw in Turin will leave Chelsea favourites to progress to the knockout stage.

Di Matteo is either biding his time or sending a message to Torres that he is no longer wanted at Stamford Bridge leaving with the only option of returning to Liverpool to find his shooting boots.
