Chelsea are lining up a £8 million move for Bolton central defender Gary Cahill who is a target of both Arsenal and Tottenham.

Andre Villas-Boas identified the England international as the man he wants to bolster his Blues' shaky back four.

Cahill is out of contract next summer but is set to leave the Reebok Stadium in the New Year, with Stamford Bridge his most likely destination.

Villas-Boas has been alarmed by the number of goals Chelsea have conceded already this season and they have only kept two clean sheets in the Barclays Premier League.

Cahill, 25, was wanted by both Tottenham and Arsenal during the summer transfer window but neither club could agree deal with Bolton, who valued the former Aston Villa man at £15 million.

The depreciation of Cahill's contract means he will be available for a significantly reduced fee in January and Chelsea would hope to do business with a bid of between £7 and £8 million.
