Chelsea are planning to swoop on Real Madrid's Gonzalo Higuain who is also sought by Liverpool.

Spanish media reported that Real president Florentino Perez is willing to let the Argentine international move to Stamford Bridge as long the Blue meet the asking price of £40 million.

It is speculated that Perez has a bigger move up his sleeve, perhaps a £70 million bid on Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney.

His statement is likely to alert many of the major clubs in Europe as Higuain has become one of Jose Mourinho’s main attacking players scoring 12 goals in 15 games.

Chelsea could definitely do with a striker £40 million Fernando Torres putting in lacklustre performances and Nicolas Anelka leaving for China, which leaves only Daniel Sturridge and Didier Drogba for Andre Villas-Boas to fall back on.

Liverpool have also been linked with the 23-year-old, as far back as August this year and since the new American takeover by FSG, have spent £60 million in the last January window on Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez and then £20m on Jordon Henderson and Charlie Adam.

Thus it could well be a two-way battle for the Los Blancos front-man who is the type of player that would easily adapt to English football due to his pace, power and ability on the ball.
