Chelsea are considering a bid for Liverpool midfielder Raul Meireles as they contemplate an improved offer for Luka Modric.

Liverpool are willing to sell Meireles to help offset their £100 million summer spending spree and anticipated selling the Portuguese abroad.

However, Andre Villas-Boas knows him well from their time at Porto and is interested to see if a deal could be done.

The 'Daily Mirror' reported that Liverpool want close to £12 million for the 28-year-old who was voted the PFA Fans Player of the Year.

Villas-Boas wants more creativity from his midfield and sees Meireles as an ideal foil for main target Tottenham's Modric.

The Croatian is likely to miss Thursday's Europa League tie against Hearts through injury but Chelsea are pressing ahead in their pursuit and  still want to put £30 million plus unsettled midfielder Yossi Benayoun into the deal.
