Liverpool's £35 million Andy Carroll was denied the chance of redeeming himself in a pulsating Premier League clash against Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday.

Carroll came in as a late substitute for Dirk Kuyt and came agonisingly close to break the 1-1 deadlock during stoppage time.

But it was England goalkeeper Joe Hart who emerged as the hero when he blocked Carroll's goal-bound header with a spectacular one-handed effort.

This perhaps the fourth time that manager Kenny Dalglish has turned to the pony-tailed hitman for a winning goal - and that goal is yet to come.

Hart also thwarted a late strike from Luis Suarez as Liverpool piled on the pressure after Manchester City were down to 10-men following the dismissal of Mario Balotteli for a second yellow.

But Suarez did not cost over £30 million. Carroll did. And the Anfield faithful's patience may last longer than King Kenny's. Could January be the deadline for Andy, or can this be Liverpool's Christmas Caroll.

Liverpool must have been pleased to come away with a point after ending Manchester City's seven-match winning sequence in the Premier League.

But Carroll, who has scored just three goals this season, must be left wondering what more he has to do to get the ball across the line.
