Luka Modric’s dream of joining Chelsea might become a reality soon after Harry Redknapp admitted they might have to sell the Tottenham striker to fund a “better team”.

The ‘Daily Mail’ reported that Redknapp is desperate to strengthen his squad and confirmed his interest in Emmanuel Adebayor, Lassana Diarra and Scott Parker.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has rejected a £27 million bid from Chelsea for Modric, who misses Thursday’s Europa League play-off against Hearts with a groin strain, but the manager understands why the Croat wants to leave and earn £130,000 a week at Stamford Bridge.

Redknapp said: “I know we all love our club but when someone offers to treble your wages with a chance to play for a team who could win the Champions League, it’s not easy. It’s difficult for him.

“I want to see him here at the start of the year but if he’s going to go, you want him to go because then you can get three or four players in.

“We can sell him, get the money, bring in four players and have a better team. Or you keep Luka, who is a fantastic player.

“I don’t know where it will end. The chairman doesn’t want to lose him.”

Premier League runners-up Chelsea are also monitoring Raul Meireles’s availability at Liverpool, though their priority remains the 25-year-old Croat, according to the ‘Daily Mail’.

The Blues have offered Yossi Benayoun as part of a package to land Modric.

Meanwhile, Tottenham are closing in on a loan deal for Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor but having sold Robbie Keane to LA Galaxy, Redknapp is still keen to add to his frontline.

Peter Crouch has been linked with a move to Stoke while either Jermaine Defoe or Roman Pavlyuchenko could also leave White Hart Lane.
