The upcoming fasting month of Ramadan will include the longest day in the year on June 21 when summer will start, according to a Saudi official.

The day on that date will last 13 hours and 27 minutes in the Western Saudi town of Makkah and an average 13 hours and 41 minutes in Medinah, said Nawaf Al Sharif, a spokesman at Met and Environment Department in the capital Riyadh.

Quoted by Saudi newspapers, he said average temperatures would be 44 degrees in the first 10 days of Ramadan in Makkah.

“Ramadan this year will include the longest day of the year and will be a very hot month,” he said.

Experts said Ramadan, expected to start this week, would also include the longest fasting period in the Gulf, exceeding 15 hours.
