Residents of the 25 floor Al Akeela building were left frightened, confused and without access to their homes after the fire that ravaged the tower in Al Nahda was brought under control by 4.30 pm.

Speaking to this website a Filipino mother with two children – one an 8-month old baby – was standing in the street waiting for her husband to return from Abu Dhabi.

Windilita Quimpos said, “I stay on the fourth floor and when I saw smoke enter the room I ran down with my children. I don’t know what is the status of my home. I have nothing for my children now.”

Amazingly, a faulty fire alarm in the building that used to go of regularly prevented people from getting out faster.

H Hariharan , who made it out in time, told this website, “The alarm used to go off almost every day for no reason. So when it went off today, we ignored it. Only when we say the smoke, did we run for our lives.”

Hariharan , his wife Pradiksha, and two children were among several families left stranded on the road waiting to find out what was left of their homes.
According to Hariharan, the fire began on the eight floor.

Residents of the building were not yet being allowed access to their homes.
