Bangladesh record rare win over Pakistan after 16 years

Bangladesh defeated Pakistan by 79 runs in the first one-day international in Dhaka on Friday to take the lead in the three-match series.

The hosts piled up 329 for six after electing to bat and then bowled out their rivals for 250 in 45.2 overs at the Sher-e-Bangla stadium.

It was only the second win for Bangladesh over Pakistan in 48 games across Test, one-day and Twenty20 formats, and the first since 1999.

The second match will be played at the same venue on Sunday.

It was only their second win over their rivals in 48 games across all three formats.

Tamim Iqbal and Mushfiqur Rahim set up the rare win with impressive centuries as the hosts piled up 329 for six after electing to take first strike at the Sher-e-Bangla stadium.

Fast bowler Taskin Ahmed and spinner Arafat Sunny claimed three wickets each as Pakistan were shot out for 250 runs in 45.2 overs to give Bangladesh the lead in the three-match series.

The only other time Bangladesh have beaten Pakistan was during a group match in the 1999 World Cup in England, but the fired-up Tigers dominated Sunday's day-night game from start to finish.

Left-handed opener Tamim hit 132 off 135 balls and Rahim smashed a 77-ball 106 to steer Bangladesh past their previous best total of 326 for three against the same rivals in 2014.

The pair added 178 runs for the third wicket - their country's highest partnership for any wicket - improving upon the 175 by Habibul Bashar and Rajin Saleh against Kenya in 2006.

"It was a real professional performance by the team," said Shakib Al Hasan, who led Bangladesh in the absence of Mashrafe Mortaza, who served a one-match ban for slow over-rates during the World Cup.

"It was a good pitch to bat on and Tamim and Mushfiq batted really well. After that we just wanted to contain their batsmen and I think our bowling unit rose to the occasion."

Tamim and Rahim ruined off-spinner Saeed Ajmal's comeback to international cricket after an absence of eight months due to an illegal bowling action.

Ajmal conceded 74 runs in 10 wicketless overs with his remodelled action to finish with his worst one-day bowling figures.

Bangladesh scored only seven runs in Ajmal's first four overs, before Tamim and Rahim lashed out at the spin spearhead.

Tamim hit 15 boundaries and three sixes in his fifth one-day century and Rahim smashed 13 fours and two sixes after being dropped by Junaid Khan when he was on 35.

The match marked the start of a new era for Pakistan cricket following the one-day retirement of skipper Misbah-ul Haq and senior all-rounder Shahid Afridi after the World Cup.

The current team comprised just four players who took part in the World Cup, giving new ODI captain Azhar Ali a relatively inexperienced bunch of tourists.

Azhar led Pakistan's batting charge with 72 off 73 runs after first two wickets had fallen for 59 runs.

Azhar shared a third-wicket stand of 89 runs with Haris Sohail to give Pakistan a glimmer of hope, before Taskin removed both batsmen.

Haris hit 51 off 64 balls, but after his departure only debutant Mohammad Rizwan defied the Bangladesh bowlers with a fluent 67.

The match swung decisively Bangladesh's way when Sunny dismissed Fawad Alam (14) and debutant Saad Nasim in the 40th over.

Taskin finished with three for 42 and left-arm spinner Sunny took three for 47 runs.

Azhar promised a better outing in the next match.

"We made some mistakes in the field and dropped catches at the wrong time, but the credit goes to the Bangladesh batsmen," he said. "I think we conceded 30 to 40 runs more than we should have.

"But there were some positives for us too. I thought Rizwan batted soundly in his first match. We will rectify our mistakes and come back strongly in the next game."

The second and third one-dayers will also be held at the same venue on April 19 and 22.

Toss

Bangladesh's stand-in captain Shakib Al Hasan has won the toss and elected to bat in the first one-day international against Pakistan in Dhaka.

Shakib is leading the hosts in the absence of Mashrafe Mortaza, who is serving a one-match ban for slow over rates during the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

The match marks the start of a new era for Pakistan following the ODI retirement of skipper Misbah-ul Haq and senior allrounder Shahid Afridi after the World Cup.

Batsman Azhar Ali is captain of the new-look team that includes just four players who took part in the World Cup.

Pakistan handed one-day debuts to batsman Mohammad Rizwan and allrounder Saad Nasim.

The tourists are boosted by the return of offspinner Saeed Ajmal after an eight-month absence due to an illegal bowling action.

Preview

Saeed Ajmal returns to centre stage after almost eight months hoping to strike early form with a remodelled bowling action when Pakistan open their tour of Bangladesh on Friday.

The prolific off-spinner became the most high-profile casualty of the International Cricket Council's crackdown on illegal actions when he was suspended from the game last September.

The 37-year-old was cleared to bowl again in February just before the World Cup Down Under, but was not picked for the showpiece event where Pakistan lost to eventual champions Australia in the quarter-finals.

Ajmal's effectiveness with a reworked action will be tested during the month-long tour of Bangladesh which comprises three one-day internationals, a solitary Twenty20 game and two Tests.

"It was torture living without cricket," Ajmal told AFP ahead of the tour. "I am confident of bowling as effectively as I used to before the suspension."

Pakistan will hope their main strike bowler, who has taken 178 Test, 183 one-day and 85 Twenty20 wickets, will deliver in all three formats on the traditionally slow pitches in Bangladesh.

With skipper Misbah-ul Haq and senior pro Shahid Afridi having retired from one-day cricket after the World Cup, Pakistan named batsman Azhar Ali as captain for the three-match series starting on Friday.

Ali, who has not played one-day cricket since 2013, leads a new-look team that includes just five players who featured in the World Cup. But the experienced Mohammad Hafeez returns to the side along with Ajmal.

Pakistan were hit by injuries to two of their World Cup squad, batsman Sohaib Maqsood and fast bowler Sohail Khan, prior to the tour and on Thursday leg-spinner Yasir Shah was ruled out with a hand injury.

Injury setback

Pakistan's leg-spinner Yasir Shah was on Thursday ruled out of the upcoming one-day series against Bangladesh, a third injury setback for the tourists in the past two weeks.

Shah, 28, needed three stitches on his left thumb after being hit during a practice match on Wednesday ahead of the first of three one-day internationals in Dhaka on Friday.

Team manager Naved Cheema told AFP that a replacement for Shah will be named shortly, but it was unclear if the leg-spinner will be available for the subsequent Test series.

Shah played just one match in the recent World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, conceding 60 runs without taking a wicket against India before being ignored for the remaining games.

The leg-spinner has taken 27 wickets in five Tests and two wickets in two one-dayers since his debut in 2011.

Two other World Cup squad members, Sohaib Maqsood and Sohail Khan, were earlier ruled out of the tour with injuries.

Confidence

Meanwhile, Bangladesh were bustling with confidence after making the World Cup quarter-finals even though they have beaten Pakistan just once in 47 games across all formats.

The lone victory came during the 1999 World Cup at Northampton, England, when Pakistan lost a group match by 62 runs even though they went on to reach the final.

Seasoned all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan saw the upcoming series as Bangladesh's "best chance" to improve his nation's record against the unpredictable Pakistanis.

"I think we should be starting as favourites to win the one-day series," said Shakib. "This is our best chance to win against Pakistan. If we play our best cricket, we can beat any side at home."

Shakib will lead Bangladesh in the first one-dayer in the absence of regular captain Mashrafe Mortaza, who is serving a one-match ban for slow over-rates during the World Cup.

Fast bowler Mortaza will return for the second and third matches on April 19 and 22.

The Twenty20 match will be held on April 24, before the two-Test series starts on April 28.

All matches will be played at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Dhaka, except the first Test which will be held in Khulna.
