IPL 7 UAE: Royal Challengers Bangalore rout Mumbai by 7 wickets

Published

Parthiv Patel and AB de Villiers put up a 99-run partnership at a crucial stage to lift Royal Challengers Bangalore to a seven-wicket win over Mumbai Indians and record their second win in the Pepsi Indian Premier League at the Dubai International Stadium on Saturday.

RCB were 17 for 3 at one stage chasing 116 for victory but the diminutive Patel played the sheet-anchor role to perfection and in the company of De Villiers took their team home with 15 balls to spare.

Patel remained not out on 57 from 45 balls with seven boundaries, while De Villiers played an aggressive unbeaten 45 from 48 balls with three fours and a six.

Earlier, Yuzvendra Chahal, Mitchell Starc and Varun Aaron bagged two wickets each to restrict Mumbai to 115 for 9.

For the Mumbai side this was their second straight defeat having lost to Kolkata Knight Riders in their first match.

Strategic Time-Out

Patel is quietly emerging a hero here in the shadow of De Villiers. RCB 92/3 after 15 overs.

RCB are cruising now. Only some hara-kiri on their part will give MI the match. RCB 82/3 after 14 overs.

Parthiv Patel is playing the second fiddle to a nicety. Here is very calmly disposes off Malinga for two back to back fours to bring down the run rate. RCB 75/3 after 13 overs.

Malinga is back into the attack. MI need him to fire if they are to win this match.

Bumrah to De Villiers and he spanks him for a six. RCB 65/3 after 12 overs.

After 10 overs MI were 69 for 3. RCB are 57/3 after 10 overs.

DROPPED! Rohit plucks the ball but only after it touches the ground else De Villiers would have been back in the pavilion.

Tight over from Harbhajan giving away only three runs. RCB 50/3 after 10 overs.

Pragyan Ojha comes to bowl his first over and Patel glides him nicely through slip cordon. It's looking easy now as RCB need a run a ball 68 from 68. RCB 47/3 after 9 overs.

Strategic Time-Out

Harbhajan does well to keep De Villiers quiet. The South African finally plays a reverse sweep to get some runs. RCB 41/3 after 8 overs.

Jasprit Bumrah replaces Malinga and goes for six runs in his first over. RCB 36/3 after 7 overs.

Diminutive Patel is not to be ruled out. He somehow stands out among the big names. Here he gets a four to the relief of RCB who are 30/3 after 6 overs.

MI are all pumped up now defending a small target, but RCB still have De Villiers and he plays a beauty of a straght drive for four. RCB 24/3 after 5 overs.

Yuvraj is clueless here. Having escaped the previous ball now fails to put bat to ball and is trapped plumb. RCB 17/3 after 4 overs.

Yuvraj Singh lbw b Khan 0 (2b 0x4 0x6)

MUMBAI INDIAN INNINGS

Some disciplined bowling from Yuzvendra Chahal (2/17), Mitchell Starc (2/21) and Varun Aaron (2/30) and some outstanding ground fielding made up for some sloppy dropped catches in the initial stages as Royal Challengers Bangalore did well to restrict Mumbai Indians to 115 for 9 from their 20 overs in the Indian Premier League at the Dubai Initernational Stadium on Saturday.

With the kind of batting line-up RCB has MI will have to reach something like 150 to make a match of it.

Umpire Aleem Dar calls for a Strategic Time-Out.

Kohli is setting an example here for fielders with a one-handed on-the-run pick up and throw to the non-striker's end and then a tumble to the appluase of the packed Dubai stadium. MI 92/4 after 15 overs.

MI have been pegged back by some tidy bowling. MI 87/4 after 14 overs.

Chahal didn't get a single game for Mumbai Indians last season and is here now to torment them.

Chahal strikes again getting rid of another dangerous batsmen. Pollard tries to loft him over long on and Rana takes a brilliant catch leaping high and picking it just inside the ropes. MI 70/4 after 11.2 overs.

Some good fielding by Starc and Maddinson on the boundary line saved some runs for RCB. MI 69/3 after 11 overs.

Chahal benefited from Aaron's tidy over where he frustrated Rohit and Rayudu. And in a bid to break the shackles Rohit tried to take on Chahal and lost the battle.

Chahal who impressed in the previous match is bang on target here with his first ball getting the big wicket of Rohit Sharma as the MI skipper holes out to De Villiers at mid-off. MI 60/3 after 9.1 overs.

Mumbai have made one change with Jasprit Bumrah coming in for Chidhambaram Gautam.

Playing XI

RCB: Parthiv Patel, Nic Maddinson, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, AB de Villiers, Albie Morkel, Sachin Rana, Ashok Dinda, Mitchell Starc, Yuzvendra Chahal, Varun Aaron.

MI: Michael Hussey, Ajinkya Tare, Ambati Rayudu, Rohit Sharma, Kieron Pollard, Corey Anderson, Harbhajan Singh, Pragyan Ojha, Zaheer Khan, Lasith Malinga, Jasprit Bumrah.

Royal Challengers Bangalore are firm favourites to beat Mumbai Indians in today's first clash of the Pepsi Indian Premier League at the Dubai International Stadium on Saturday.

Without Chris Gayle, RCB made light work of Delhi Daredevils in their previous match with Yuvraj Singh in ominous form and giving him good company was the skipper Virat Kohli. At the top Parthiv did well to get the team off to a good chase.

All are eagerly waiting to know if Gayle will get the nod today?

But credit should go to RCB's Yuzvendra Singh for impressive bowling figures of 4-0-18-1 earning him the man of the match.

Mumbai have some rethinking to do. Michael Hussey, Corey Anderson and Kieron Pollard failed to fire against Kolkata Knight Riders and the defending champions lost their first match badly by 41 runs.

These three players need to fire if they are to win today.
