IPL6: Sehwag powers Delhi to win over Mumbai

Delhi Daredevils trounced Mumbai Indian by nine wicket to record their first win in IPL6 in Match 28 at Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium in Delhi on Sunday.

Chasing a stiff target of 162, Virender Sehwag and Mahela Jayawardene cracked contrasting half centuries during a record opening stand of 151 to steer Delhi to a memorable victory.

Sehwag returned to vintage form blasting 13 fours and two sixes in his 57-ball unbeaten 95 while Mahela used his blade like a rapier contributing 59 off 43 balls eight boundaries and a six.

Mumbai got a consolation wicket when Malinga trapped Mahela leg before but it came a little too late.

Teenage debutant Bumrah was the most expensive going for 38 in his three overs while Harbhajan also went for 30 in three overs.

None of the bowlers were spare with Smith's two overs costing 24, Pollard going for 11 in one over and Patel 36 in four over. Malinga's solitary wicket came at a cost of 26.

Sehwag's innings overshadowed that of Tendulkar's half century earlier for Mumbai who made 161 for four.

Delhi were perhaps inspired by the arrival of West Indian legend Sir Vivian Richards as advisor and brand ambassador for the Daredevils.

Mumbai Indians spurred by brilliant half centuries from Sachin Tendulkar (54) and Rohit Sharma (73) made 161-4 after opting to bat first.

After a slow start and the loss two wickets for 22, Sharma and Tendulkar opened out during a 96-run stand for the third wicket.

Tendulkar struck form with a vintage 54 off 47 balls stroking three boundaries and two sixes.

Sharma belted five sixes and five boundaries in a 43-ball 73 before falling in the penultimate over.

DELHI DAREDEVILS INNINGS

Sehwag pulls Bumrah to midwicket for the winning boundary as Delhi reach 165 for one in 17 overs to beat Mumbai by nine wickets and three overs to spare.

The opening stand of 151 between Sehwag and Mahela which came off just 95 balls is the highest in IPL6.

Mumbai finally get a breakthrough as Malinga traps Mahela leg before. Delhi 151-1 in 15.5 overs.

Sehwag is riding his luck drilling a yorker from Malinga to third man fence.

Sehwag has hit consecutive boundaries off Patel punching him over extra cover and edging past the keeper to third man. Delhi 144-0 after 15 overs.

Mahela has swung Patel to square leg as Delhi are racing to victory. Delhi 133-0 after 14 overs.

Sehwag has cracked consecutive boundaries off Harbhajan to bring up 2,000 runs in his IPL career. Delhi 126-0 after 12 overs.

Mahela completes his second half century in IPL6 off 34 balls with seven boundaries and a six. Delhi 114-0 after 12 overs.

Malinga returns but Mahela has caressed him with superb timing through the covers. Delhi 109-0 after 11 overs.

Delhi openers Sehwag and Mahela have smashed the fastest 100 of IPL 6 as Smith goes for 14 in his second over. Delhi 102-0 after 10 overs.

Sehwag has spanked Smith to extra cover fence while Mahela has hit an amazing six over backward square leg.

Mahela has hit another classic boundary sweeping Harbhajan to fine leg. Delhi 88-0 after 9 overs.

There is no stopping Sehwag as he whips Smith for a towering six over midwicket.

Sehwag completes his half century off just 31 balls with a single. Delhi are 80-0 after 8 overs.

Delhi are continuing merrily with Mahela getting another boundary via an exquisite reverse sweep off Harbhajan in the seventh over. Delhi 70-0.

Harbhajan into the attack in the seventh over as Mumbai try to contain Delhi with some spin.

Sehwag (39) with six boundaries and a six and Mahela (20) with four hits to the ropes have given Delhi a flying start in the Powerplay overs.

Even Malinga cannot stem the flow of runs as Sehwag clips him to midwicket for a boundary and steers him to third man in consecutive balls. Delhi 60-0 after 6 overs.

Munaf Patel also for 17 in his second over with Sehwag and Mahela cracking consecutive boundaries with some glorious strokeplay. Delhi 51-0 after 5 overs.

Bumrah goes for 17 in his second over as Mahela finishes with a lovely straight drive to the fence. Delhi 42-0 after 4 overs.

Vivian Richards seems to have motivated Sehwag who is back to his vintage smashing a boundary and six off Bumrah in the fourth over.

Sehwag flicks Patel to fine leg for his first boundary in the third over.

Mahela and Sehwag open batting for Delhi as Malinga opens the attack for Mumbai.

MUMBAI INDIANS INNINGS

Pollard remained unbeaten on 19 hammering off the last ball as Mumbai finished with a flourish with their last six overs yielding 66 runs.

Sharma flicks Yadav for a spectacular six over midwicket but his brilliant knock comes to an end when Russell takes superb catch on the boundary.

Agarkar goes for 15 in the 18th over as Sharma turns it on for Mumbai by clubbing a couple of sixes. Mumbai 135-3.

Delhi finally get a breakthrough as Tendulkar falls after a wonderful knock caught by Warner at midoff. Mumbai 118-3.

Tendulkar added 96 runs in 67 balls for the third wicket with Sharma.

Tendulkar reaches his half century in style hoisting Agarkar over midwicket for a six. Mumbai 118-2 after 16 overs.

Sharma completes his half century off 31 balls having hit five boundaries and two sixes.

Pathan has gone for 12 in his final over with Sharma hitting a couple of boundaries. Mumbai 107-2 after 15.

Sharma smashes a full toss from van der Merwe to the fence in the 14th over. Mumbai 95-2.

Sharma is stepping up the ante with some elegant shots on either side of the wicket smashing Yadav for a couple of boundaries in the 13th over. Mumbai 87-2.

The 50-partnership between Tendulkar and Sharma for the third wicket comes in 39 balls. Mumbai 74-2 in 12.

Tendulkar (37) has been given a life by Nadeem who drops a sitter off his own bowling.

Russell's first over goes for 13 with Sharma smashing a boundary and a six in the 11th over. Mumbai 70-2.

Nadeem bowls a tight over giving away just four runs as Mumbai recover to reach 57-2 at the halfway stage.

Sharma smashes vander Merwe straight over the bowler's head for a massive six to bring up the 50 of the Mumbai innings in the ninth over. Mumbai 53-2.

Tendulkar has got into his stride paddling Nadeem to the fine leg boundary in the eighth over. Mumbai 43-2.

Tendulkar has hit the first six of the smashing Agarkar over midwicket in the seventh over. Mumbai 35-2.

Delhi Daredevils have choked Mumbai in the Powerplay overs who manage just 24 for the loss of two wickets.

Mumbai lose their second wicket as Karthik is run out backing up too far with Yadav deflecting a straight drive from Tendulkar onto the stumps. Mumbai 22-2.

Smith hit the first boundary of the match off vander Merwe in the first ball of the fourth over but is out next ball caught by Yadav at mid off. Mumbai 11-1.

The Delhi Daredevils (DD) and Mumbai Indians (MI), who suffered humiliating defeats in their last outings, face off in Match 28 of IPL6 at Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium in Delhi on Sunday.

DD have lost all their six games and will be playing for pride.

Daredevils will seek inspiration from West Indian great Sir Vivian Richards who has been with the squad for the past 24 hours.

Both teams have made three changes each.

Mumbai: Dwayne Smith for Mitchell Johnson, Munaf Patel for Pragyan Ojha, Jasprit Bumrah for Rishi Dhawan.

Delhi: Roelof comes in Mendis, Russell in for Morne Morkel, Venugopal Rao for Manpreet Juneja.
