A monumental double century by Shoaib Malik (245) helped Pakistan make a mammoth 523-8 declared on the second day of the first Test against England at Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday.

England closed the second day of the first test in Abu Dhabi on 56-0 as captain Cook finished on 39 not out, with Moeen unbeaten on 15.

He was associated in a record fifth wicket stand of 248 with Asad Shafiq (107), which was the highest ever fifth-wicket partnership for Pakistan against England.

Pakistan declared their first innings shortly after Malik's marathon innings came to an end in the final session.

The 33-year-old Malik made the third-highest score ever by a Pakistan batsman against England before falling to Ben Stokes while attempting to drag the bowler from outside off stump with a tired looking stroke.

Malik said he felt proud at such a memorable comeback.

"It was challenging, first it was my comeback then I came to the crease in only the third over but I had the resolve and the confidence to do well and that helped me throughout my innings," said Malik, who had to take treatment for dehydration after his 647-minute vigil.

Stokes ended with figures of four for 57 as he took three wickets in the first 45 minutes after the tea break, with Sarfraz Ahmed (two) and Zulfiqar Babar (zero) falling tamely.

Adil Rashid ended with figures of 0-163 after 34 overs, the worst ever figures for a debutant in Tests.

After failing to take a wicket in the first two sessions of the day, it took Mark Wood just three balls after tea to break the the partnership of Malik and Asad Shafiq, with the latter falling leg before for 107.
