Arsenal shock as Vertonghen at Spurs

Ajax captain was given a VIP tour of White Hart Lane

Arsenal are in shock as Jan Vertonghen has been given a VIP tour of Tottenham, The Sun reported in an exclusive.

Gunners were favourites to land Vertonghen who is a close pal of Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen.

Wenger wanted to complement Vermaelen, Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker with the signing of Vertonghen, 24, who has been described as an elegant and technical ball-playing central defender who can play in other positions.

He had been sending scouts to watch Vertonghen and was ready to complete a £7 million cut-price deal, as the player only has one year left on his contract.

But Harry Redknapp appears to have a pulled a rabbit out of his hat by beating Wenger and also Sir Alex Ferguson for the signature of the Ajax captain.

Vertonghen was snuck into White Hart Lane to watch the season finale against Fulham, before being shown around their new training ground, the report added.

The £13 million-rated Belgian defender could replace Ledley King, who faces another knee op this week.

Spurs striker and former Ajax star Rafael van der Vaart appears to have influenced Vertonghen's decision.

Van der Vaart, who came through the ranks at the Amsterdam side just a few years before Vertonghen, said earlier: "I hope Jan comes to Tottenham. As far as I know the deal is close to being done."

And the 29-year-old midfielder revealed in The Sun that the club had sought van der Vaart's advice over Vertonghen, who can play as a centre-back, a left-back or in midfield.
"Spurs asked me about him. If he’s sensible, he will opt to join us," he added.

Man United to steal Vertonghen from Arsenal

Sir Alex Ferguson is making a desperate move to prevent Ajax captain Jan Vertonghen from joining a rival Premier League club, according to the Mirror.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger remains hopeful of clinching a £7 million deal for the Belgian defender, while Tottenham are also making a frantic bid to secure his services.

Now, Manchester United boss Ferguson is also tracking the centre-half.

Vertonghen admits he has a tough decision to make.

He said: “I have to make a choice. There’s something going on with Tottenham, but there are more clubs interested in signing me.

“The most important thing for me is that I get regular playing time. Plus I need a stable environment.

Arsenal Shouldn't be in shock .wenger intentional drag his feet and refused to sign Vertonghen because he a central defener and he has four central defenders all of them worse than Vertonghen ...Wenger will do the same with all Arsenal targets. Arsenal have only one solution to rid themselves of Wenger and to bring Guardiola and rebuild their squad with world class players

So WHEN was Vertonghen linked with Arsenal as all i had heard was his desire to come to Spurs since the January transfer window?!

Why is it a shock that he wants to join a club on the up, and not a bunch who THINK they are good. Arsenal are has beens. Even your own fans know that.

J.V's future is in his hands. Everyone knows where he should go if England is on his mind. That said, Sagna needs an able sub or dare I say replacement cos there's no point wearing d brother down.

Woe betide Arsenal if we continue with Wenger's meanness. We lose Vertonghen again to Totenham in the same way we lost Modric to Spurs. It is time Wenger goes if he thinks Mertesacker, Koscielny and Vermaelen are all we need in defence to win the EPL and moreso the Champions League.Worry a lot if Steve Bould is already another yes man who has been threatened by Wenger claiming Pat Rice spoke less.

The Spuds need to start scouting their own players rather than looking to see who Arsenal are scouting and then sending a scout of their own to scout their own player. Champions League football will also be a factor in Vertonghen's decision, and, he will get just as much game time at Arsenal, as he will at The Spuds. Another example of The Spuds forever being in Arsenal's shadow!

There is nothing surprising about this. While Verongthen is slightly better than the verminator. He and kosc have developed great co ordination. We already have per as a sub. I think we should buy fullbacks instead of a CB. Also it isnt shocking that arsenal are always linked to players before any other club as they have the best scouts. It also isnt surprising that other clubs get these players as we have lower funds available due to our loan.

I'm shocked. "Spurs sign player they've been interested in for a while and have more need of than Arsenal". Wenger will be absolutely reeling when he reads this!

I want Arsene Wenger to sign this defender
  • David 15 May 2012 08:42 43 26
Spurs have been tracking this player for a long time and were always favourites for his signature so to say "Gunners were favourites" is just factually wrong.

is it a suprise that two sides seperated by one point ahould be looking at the same players?

This was on the cards for a long time. It's no surprise to us Spurs fans and shouldn't be to Wenger, either.
