End of season for Arsenal's Wilshere

Arsene Wenger confirmed Arsenal's worst fears when he ruled out Jack Wilshere from Euro 2012, according to a report.

Arsenal’s rising England star is now unlikely to play again this season according to the Gunners boss, The Sun reported.

Midfielder Wilshere, 20, is struggling with a stress fracture in his foot and time is running out for him to force his way into the squad for this summer’s finals.

Wenger said: “I will not take any risks with him. He is making slow progress so we still have to monitor the situation a little bit at the moment.

“The next three weeks will be decisive.

“We are now in mid-April, the Euros start in the middle of June.

“Jack has not played the whole season and for anyone who knows what is required at the top level, in terms of intensity, time is getting short now.”

Wilshere has not trained with Arsenal’s first-team squad more than 10 weeks after hurting his foot while recovering from an ankle injury suffered on England duty in June last year.

Wilshere’s injury saga is a devastating blow for club and country.

And it comes a week after the budding superstar began training in a determined bid to return for the run-in.

He was expected to play against Chelsea later this month to boost his Euro chances.

But Wenger cannot even risk him in behind-closed-doors practice games at the Gunners’ Hertfordshire training ground.

Wenger added: “He’s down. Jack is mentally strong but what is holding him back is that he can’t play football so he can’t be happy. He is still training in the gym.”
