Rio Ferdinand is determined to bring back trophies for Manchester United but his future at Old Trafford seems uncertain.

The United veteran has been hit by injury in recent years but has made 11 appearances this season.

“Last time I managed 30-odd games and if I do that again I’ll see that as a successful season personally," said Ferdinand.

“But it’s about the team and we need to make sure we finish the season with some trophies.”

But United boss Alex Ferguson who had to back down when Ferdinand refused to wear the anti-racism shirt, will offer the 34 year-old centre-half only a one-year deal at the end of this season.

This has made the former United skipper think twice about his future.

“It is always good to hear the manager say things like that but you have to take every week and month as it come," he was quoted as saying in The Sun.

“The best thing I can do is to look at it at Christmas, and then again in the summer to see how I’m feeling and go from there.”

Ferguson risks jeopardising United's campaign by showing the exit door to Nemanja Vidic who has been sidelined by injury.

In his absence Johny Evans has emerged as an unlikely centreback powerhouse.

He has matured in terms of positioning, he has threatened to score more than once, and even score occasionally, but most importantly, he has yet to commit a foul in every Premier League game he has started.

That is the end of Vidic surely. Ferguson has long spoken about the need for a steady back two and in Rio Ferdinand and John Evans he now has it.

Having a centre-back that does not commit fouls is priceless.

Even though Chelsea’s Fernando Torres believes Evans should have a yellow card at least for a tackle in the (in)famous 3-2 loss, in which referee Mark Clattenberg sent off Torres for diving.

What has most impressed about Evans has been his newfound ability to walk the ball out of defence – at times almost eschewing a Barcelona-esque manner about his play.

Vidic is likely to face a Jaap Stam-type exit – quick and painful.
