To gain legend status at Liverpool is not an easy task.

The Kop is patient, but being bred on past glories few clubs in the world can match, standards are high.

Steven Gerrard is up there with the greatest of Liverpool players.

However, he does not want to be up there with the greatest of Liverpool players never to have won the Premier League title for the Reds.

In comments that are sure to raise a few eyebrows, Gerrard, who is currently recovering from an ankle injury has said he is haunted by the prospect of ending his career without a title winner's medal at Anfield.

Gerrard says the prospect of eventually hanging up his boots with a gaping hole in his trophy cabinet leaves him cold.

It’s what is known as the Arsenal syndrome –stars that seemed to be Arsenal players till the end, like Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri, finally left because the prospect of not winning titles was bigger than their love for the club.

Gerrard, 31, told The Sub: "It's something I think about almost every day. I always think about the dream of winning it — or the disappointment if I was never to win it.

"To have played at Liverpool for 14 or 15 years by the time I finish and not win it would be hugely disappointing. It would be an awful shame."

Liverpool are currently sixth and leaders Manchester City are 12 points ahead of them.

But, the big question is, how long will Gerrard be able to live without a Premier League winners medal around his neck? Will he stay, or will he go?

The England midfielder has played just four league games all year after groin surgery delayed his kick-off until the end of September.

For the moment though, he says he has seen enough in Kenny Dalglish's new-look squad to convince him Liverpool can make a serious challenged over the next few years.

"In my time, we've been fighting with Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea and now City and Spurs.

"They have all been, or are, fantastic teams — but that's the way football has gone. It's a really difficult competition to win but we'll always keep fighting for it,” he said.

Luis Suarez, Andy Carroll, Charlie Adam, Jordan Henderson, Stewart Downing, Craig Bellamy, Jose Enrique, Doni and Sebastian Coates will all have to raise their game to keep Gerrard’s dream alive.
