Have Liverpool bought the right players in the transfer market?

That is the question observers and fans are asking after new boys Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson failed to stop Hull thumping a mixed Kop side.

Downing and Henderson joined fellow summer buy Charlie Adam amid the visitors' 11 second-half substitutes.

Boss Dalglish also delayed the entries of Andy Carroll, Dirk Kuyt and Jay Spearing - while Joe Cole and Alberto Aquilani failed to revive their recent fortunes.

Superb goals from Robert Brady and Robert Koren left Hull 2-0 up inside 34 minutes before Jay Simpson punished poor defending on the hour mark.

Dalglish was quoted in The Sun as saying: "It is pre-season and it's to get players fit and get rid of their mistakes, but I certainly think we've got a few mistakes to get rid of after today.

"Obviously we're disappointed at losing. It doesn't matter whether it was a pre-season friendly or not, but the fact it is pre-season gives us a bit of solace.

He added: "The lads are at various degrees of fitness. For example Jordan has only trained for a week so it was a bit much to ask him to start this game. Then it is up to them to stake a claim for a first-team place. If they want it, they have got to earn it."

Hull bagged a first-half double worthy of winning far more important games.

Hull's third compounded Liverpool's fragilities, although Simpson looked possibly offside when he turned completely unmarked to fire home,
