Liverpool old boy Emile Heskey could be the man to rescue Brendan Rodgers who is desperately looking for a striker to boost their depleted ranks.

Rodgers was left scratching his head after letting Andy Carroll go on loan to West Ham but failing to convince his bosses to sign American star Clint Dempsey from Fulham.

The result was a 2-0 home defeat by Arsenal which has left Rodgers  reflecting on the club's worst start to a league campaign for 50 years.

It followed the opening day defeat by West Bromwich Albion and a 2-2 draw with champions Manchester City.

Rodgers admitted he was willing to consider former Liverpool star Michael Owen who became a free agent in June after a three-year spell at Manchester United.

It could be a sentimental return for Owen if he were to return to the club where he score 158 goals in 297 games between 1996 and 2004.

But the problem is Owen is unlikely to be match-fit having played only four games in all competitions during the 2011/12 season.

Former England striker Heskey could be a better option because he is looking to find himself a new club this week, according to reports in the British press.

He remind everyone recently that he is fit and available and although it's been eight seasons since the former England man hit double figures in a campaign (he bagged 11 goals for Birmingham City in 2004/05).

"I feel as fit and hungry as I have done in a long time and have been training everyday throughout the summer," he said.

"As has been reported I did receive a number of offers during the transfer window but didn't feel like any of them were the right opportunity for me at that time.

"I'm now looking forward to hopefully securing a new club over the coming days."

The 34-year-old, a free agent after leaving Aston Villa,  would prefer to remain in England.

Heskey has rejected a move to Championship side Blackpool.
