Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is ready to scuttle Manchester United's bid for Crewe starlet Nick Powell, the Mirror (https://bit.ly/Mc3Qz1) reported in an exclusive.
New Kop chief Rodgers is prepared to top the offers from United and the Arsenal for the young striker, it added.
Powell has been cleared for talks with United boss Sir Alex Ferguson by the Railwaymen.
The 18-year-old made a stunning impact for his club as they reached League One.
His spectacular goal in the play-off final against Cheltenham was the highlight of his 16 goals last season.
Powell has attracted the attention of several top-flight clubs such as Chelsea and United who appear to be favourites for the £10 million-rated front man.
Arsenal have offered more money for Powell, but Crewe surprisingly snubbed their approach.
Now Rodgers hopes he can step in and win the race with a better bid.
The battle has begun in earnest for an 18-year-old although Tottenham have dropped out.
Powell will also have a say on his move since he wants to play first-team football either at his new club or by being sent out on loan.
