More Giggs means no Sneijder for Man Utd

Sir Alex Ferguson does not like to apologise – except of course, if it’s to the fans; the legions of whom treat him like a divine being… above reproach or questioning.

However, the change in the footballing landscape over the past years may  now expose Fergie’s stubbornness as perhaps costing United.

Sir Alex chose not to sign an experienced playmaker in the summer and  that decision has left Manchester United exposed on several fronts, in terms of their quest for trophies.

The latest disaster was the Carling Cup, when Fergie’s babes let him down  badly and the manager had to say sorry to the fans.

Fact of the matter is: Fergie is still unlikely to sign the likes of  Wesley Sneijder or even Mario Gotze in the January transfer window.

Evidence of this came from an exclusive story in the Sun, which reported  that Ryan Giggs is in line for another 12-month contract — if he decides  to play on.

Giggs’ longevity might be a direct consequence of Sir Alex not wanting to  buy a ‘ready-made’ world-class mid-field maestro, preferring to wait till Tom Cleverley and Anderson are back fit.

The news will worry United fans who are already behind City in the title race by five points.

The Reds face a must-win away Champions League game at Basel, who are  deceptively tough to beat.

By January, United’s season could be over.

Meanwhile, United’s Carling Cup flops could pay the ultimate price for losing to Crystal Palace.

Dimitar Berbatov, Darron Gibson, Kiko Macheda and Mame Biram Diouf could be let go.

Fergie is not afraid to be ruthless with those who do not cut it in the League Cup.

According to the Sun, four years ago United crashed out to Coventry at Old Trafford and of the 14 players on duty, nine have since left while Tomasz Kusczak is frozen out.

Ferguson's men were also humbled at West Ham 12 months ago and four  players from that squad have gone.

There big question mark is Berbatov, who limped off at half-time after another poor display.
