Brazil legend Ronaldo feels Santos ace Neymar should move sooner than later to Spain and choose Real Madrid over Barcelona.

A report in Brazil suggested that Barca had stolen a march on Madrid and struck a deal with Santos for the transfer of the highly-rated teenage star.

Luis Alvaro, president of the Brazilian club has dismissed the idea that a deal is in place for Neymar to move to Barcelona in 2013 and told ESPN Brazil: “I did not sign anything.

“By the end of the transfer window, the idea was shelved. There are always conversations but a €60 million proposal never came and I doubt it ever will.”

However, Alvaro reiterated that Neymar could be allowed to leave if a club meets their valuation of the player in the future.

“If he wants to leave, according to the conditions of Santos, he can leave,” he stressed. “But if he wants to stay, then I want him to remain with us for a long time.

“When he will get a proposal, I will be the first person to tell him, but right now there is nothing.”

Ronaldo, who played for Barcelona from 1996 to 1997 and for Madrid from 2002 to 2006, has weighed in by saying that the Santiago Bernabeu would be a better place for his compatriot to flourish.

“Both options are great, but I still hope he goes to Real Madrid, where I spent five years,” Ronaldo told Terra. “I think it would be better for him.”

Neymar has always affirmed he is in no rush to embark on a journey in Europe, but two-time World Cup winner Ronaldo says the 19-year-old needs to leave his homeland.

“Brazil has become too small for Neymar,” Ronaldo added. “This is his moment and he needs to have the ambition to conquer the world, rather than just be the best in Brazil.”

Neymar’s father also insisted there is no deal with Barcelona.

“There is no pre-contract, nothing,” Neymar da Silva Santos told ESPN Brazil. “He (Neymar) has the Club World Cup for Santos ahead of him.

“Those are just speculations, we already said this during the transfer window. I am surprised. All these news about Neymar have emerged since he was 13.”
