Swap Arsenal’s Giroud for Liverpool’s Borini... for flop of season

It may be early days in the Premier League – or that is certainly what you are hoping if you’re, let’s see, QPR, Manchester United and maybe even Liverpool.

The season could be technically over for those three in terms of Premier League success – of course depending on which each club has defined as achievable goals for this season.

For one club though, the season seems to be just beginning – Arsenal.

Except they already have a contender for flop of the season - Olivier Giroud.

Missed so far: One chance against Liverpool, one chance against Sunderland, one chance against Chelsea.

Scoring two out of those three could have seen Arsenal actually contemplate a title charge this season.

The fact is, scoring against Coventry counts for nothing if you don’t score when it matters.

Giroud by his own admission and by that of his manager’s as well, has wilted under the pressure of filling Robin Van Persie’s shoes.

“Once the first goes in, maybe the rest will follow,” was how Wenger sees it.

The question is: how long before the first goes in?

Competing with Giroud in the early stakes for flop of the season is Fabio Borini over at Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool tiki-taka revolution.

Another cup tie scorer, Borini has looked all but absent in Premier League games struggling with the pace, toughness and finishing required to make him a Kop darling.

Even young Raheem Sterling looks more settled and comfortable.

Liverpool don’t have a good history with Italians – remember Alberto Aquilani?
