The world's elite are expected to vie for glory in the 5th Dubai International Open Bowling Championships to be held from October 1 to 14.

It is being held under the patronage of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council (DSC).

Organised by the UAE Bowling Association with sponsorship from Commercial Bank of Dubai and Al Masaood Group of companies, it will be held at Dubai International Bowling Centre in Al Mamzar.

Total prize money of Dh339,000 will be on offer with the competition being conducted in three categories, it was announced at a press conference at DSC office on Sunday.

The prize money for the three categories are Open (Dh240,000), Women's (Dh64,300) and Youth (Dh34,800).

Dr. Ahmed Al Sharif, Secretary-General of DSC said they were pleased to continue their association with UAE Bowling Association in organising this championship.

"We have been keen to support the organisation of this championship since its inception in 2010," Dr Al Sharif said.

"It gives us great pleasure to realise the objectives of holding such an event in spreading and developing the game, providing our players of various categories an opportunity to compete with other international players in order to raise their technical skills and talents," he added.

The Open category is open to residents as well as UAE nationals.

Mohammed Al Qubaisi, Chairman of UAE Bowling Association expressed his gratitude and appreciation to Sheikh Hamdan for patronising the championship and also the generous support of national companies.

"The DSC's support during the last four years, was one of the main reasons of the success and continuation of the event. We are happy to be sponsored by two outstanding national organisations, namely, CBD and Al Masaood Group,” he added.

"This Championship is approved and classified by both the Asian and International Federations of the game. This classification encouraged the best players of the world to take part in it. Our national players will have the chance to compete with the top players of this sport," he said.

During the past four editions of the event, it had been won twice by Emirati players.

Finn Oskopalerma won the title in 2010 edition where 101 players competed. In 2011, the UAE national star Shakir Ali won the title from a field of 151. Swede Kempolipa won the third edition in 2012 in which 125 players competed. UAE won the last edition through Mahmud Ahmed Alataar in 2013.

"While this championship provides an opportunity for our players to gain more experience, it acquires additional value as it is considered as a preparation for the Men’s World Championship to be organised this year, and the Women’s World Championship in Abu Dhabi in 2015,” added Al Qubaisi.
