Dubai launches multi-event Corporate Sports tournament

Dubai Sports Council in association with Corporate Games has launched a new iniative to promote healthy lifestyle in a working environment through active engagement in sports.

The inaugural Dubai Corporate Sports Tournament is to be held under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council.

Running for six weeks from February, it will culminate with the grand finals on March 21 with a multi-sport festival.

Six different sports will make up the event programme. These are: Athletics (100m and 200m); 7-a-side football; cricket 8’s; basketball 3’s; touch-rugby; and ten-pin bowling.

The Dubai Corporate Sports Tournament has been created to stimulate teamwork between employees, enhance their confidence and moral, improve communication and relationships within teams and encourage keen competition among companies, as well as promoting health and fitness in the work place.

All sports, except for the bowling, are to be held at Dubai Sports City venues, including the ICC’s indoor cricket facility. The bowling will be held at the Dubai International Bowling Centre.

DCST 2014 allows participants of all ages (from 14 years old upwards) and abilities. The only requirement for entry is that the participants are representing a company or organisation.

“As per the Dubai Sports Council mandate and guidance from the Chairman, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, we are constantly looking to find new and innovative ways to encourage participation in sport and to promote active, healthy lifestyles,” said Secretary General of of the Dubai Sports Council, Dr. Ahmed Al Sharif said, at a press conference on Wednesday.

"Science has proved that sports make everyone happy. Competitions like this will reflect in positive way in work environemnt. Achieving victory will be an added motivation," he said when asked how they would attract companies to participate.

Fanny Marcout, CEO of Corporate Games – UAE, said they were expecting 1,500 to 2,000 numbers participating.

The Corporate Games is a worldwide brand that has been involved in organising highly successful multi-sports events in major cities across the world and region.
